Dubai is situated in the northwest of the United Arab Emirates, on the Arabian Gulf. The city itself is divided by a creek and was, for a long time, a celebrated centre for fishing and pearl diving. Although little is known of the region’s early history, scientists believe that people have lived here since as long ago as 3000 BC.
The development of Dubai into one of the foremost cities in the world has been greatly aided by the discovery of oil and its production in the 1960’s. It has also become an important port of call for Western manufacturers and is developing as a hub for service industries like IT and finance.
